Build a Course Map for DPT Prerequisites
Make one column for each target DPT program and one row for each required subject. Add the undergraduate course number, credit value, lab component, grade, and completion date. Mark each cell as approved, planned, or awaiting review. This becomes a shared advising document, not a guess based on similar course names.
APTA identifies anatomy, physiology, biology, chemistry, physics, psychology, and statistics among common prerequisites. Individual programs set their own requirements. APTA also cautions that some schools restrict the department in which anatomy or physiology is taught, so a kinesiology course may need explicit approval.

What Delaware’s Rules Show About Course Names
The University of Delaware offers a useful example of why a degree audit needs detail. Its DPT entrance requirements include two semesters each of general biology, chemistry, and physics with labs. Anatomy cannot replace general biology, and exercise physiology cannot replace its physiology requirement. A two-course anatomy-and-physiology sequence may satisfy the anatomy and physiology requirement.
Delaware accepts online lab credit only for courses taken in 2020 or 2021. It also distinguishes observation timing: 25 hours are due when applying and 50 by matriculation. What a Named Pre-PT Degree Can Already Include
A dedicated track can make the map easier. Texas Woman’s pre-PT kinesiology curriculum, for example, includes chemistry and physics with labs, anatomy and physiology, psychology, and statistics. Its exercise-science internship has its own purpose and should be checked separately against PT observation requirements.
Marshall’s pre-PT emphasis publishes science sequences and an exercise-science internship, while warning that summer enrollment or heavier semesters may be needed to finish in four years. Confirm Labs and Course Substitutions Before Paying
Send the DPT admissions office the course description and syllabus when the match is unclear. Include the lab delivery format, contact hours if requested, and whether the laboratory appears separately on the transcript. An advisor’s general recommendation is useful, but the graduate program controls admission equivalency.
Keep written approval with the date and admission cycle. If you later change graduate-school targets, recheck the course against the new program instead of carrying the old approval across. This is especially useful for online labs, combined A&P sequences, and statistics offered outside a mathematics department.
Schedule Sequences Before Electives
Work backward from the intended DPT start date. Place prerequisite sequences in order, then add the bachelor’s major courses, internship, and application tasks. A course that is offered once a year can affect the plan even when you have enough total credits.
Give a planned retake its own place in the calendar. Also record when a school requires prerequisites to be finished: at application, by a stated deadline, or before matriculation. Those dates determine whether a final summer course is an option. Ask about course-age limits when using older science credits.
Price the Remaining Requirements
Once the course map is approved, calculate the remaining expense using actual courses and terms. Include lab fees, travel, and a possible extra semester. A community-college course may be a reasonable option when your target DPT programs accept it and the course fits your bachelor’s plan.
Separate degree graduation requirements from DPT admission requirements in the budget. A course may be necessary for admission even if it does not shorten your bachelor’s degree. Conversely, a bachelor’s elective can be valuable without satisfying a prerequisite. Label both clearly so you know what each payment accomplishes.
Keep an Application Evidence Folder
Save syllabi, written course approvals, lab descriptions, transcripts, observation records, and contact details for references. Name files by institution, course, and term so you can retrieve a document quickly. Maintain the course map alongside those files and review it before every registration period.
The finished worksheet should let you explain every prerequisite in one line: the requirement, the course that meets it, the grade or planned term, and the supporting approval when needed. That level of clarity is more useful than relying on the pre-PT label alone.
Questions About Kinesiology to Physical Therapy
Do DPT Programs Require a Kinesiology Major?
No. APTA says there is no required undergraduate major. You need the degree and prerequisite preparation specified by each target DPT program.
Does Exercise Physiology Replace General Physiology?
Do not assume so. Delaware expressly excludes exercise physiology as a substitute for its physiology prerequisite. Ask each target school to approve the exact course.
