Which Kinesiology Jobs Need a Graduate Degree?

Three of the 8 jobs need a degree beyond the bachelor’s: physical therapist, occupational therapist and athletic trainer. Most states license all three, so the degree is a legal gate, not an employer preference. A kinesiology bachelor’s gets you into the applicant pool, and the graduate program is what qualifies you to work.

The other five jobs open at a lower rung. Recreational therapists, exercise physiologists and coaches usually start with a bachelor’s, physical therapist assistants need an associate degree from an accredited assistant program, and fitness trainers need a certification. The table lists all 8 with the median national wage.

Median Pay for the 8 Jobs, Graduate-Degree Jobs Highlighted

National median annual wage, BLS May 2025.

Physical therapist, graduate degree $102,760 Occupational therapist, graduate degree $100,330 Physical therapist assistant $68,380 Athletic trainer, graduate degree $62,520 Recreational therapist $61,960 Exercise physiologist $59,460 Coach or scout $47,320 Fitness trainer or instructor $47,160
Dark bars are the 3 jobs that need a graduate degree. n = 8 jobs; employment behind the medians ranges from 8,560 to 322,930 workers.
Jobs kinesiology majors take, with entry degree, median pay and employment
Job Degree to enter Median pay Middle half earns Workers
Physical therapist Doctoral degree (graduate) $102,760 $86,160 to $121,160 267,330
Occupational therapist Master's degree (graduate) $100,330 $82,510 to $116,670 162,450
Physical therapist assistant Associate's degree $68,380 $59,820 to $78,680 112,430
Athletic trainer Master's degree (graduate) $62,520 $55,130 to $74,630 30,500
Recreational therapist Bachelor's degree $61,960 $50,240 to $79,930 14,930
Exercise physiologist Bachelor's degree $59,460 $49,620 to $67,230 8,560
Coach or scout Bachelor's degree $47,320 $35,330 to $64,710 248,950
Fitness trainer or instructor Certification $47,160 $35,280 to $61,730 322,930

Physical therapists and occupational therapists both earn over $100,000, so the graduate degree clearly pays for itself. Athletic trainers don’t get that deal. Their median of $62,520 is below the $68,380 that a physical therapist assistant earns after a two-year degree. Read the athletic trainer master’s degree guide before you commit.

How Much Does a Kinesiology Degree Cost by Level and Sector?

Sector decides the price more than level does. A public bachelor’s program charges a median of $8,388 a year, and a public master’s charges $8,319, so the graduate years cost about what the undergraduate years do. The private numbers are $35,025 and $31,000.

Median annual tuition by award level and sector
Level Public median Public range Private median Private range Programs, public / private
Associate's $4,907 $2,010 to $10,120 $30,246 $20,100 to $46,276 58 / 4
Bachelor's $8,388 $2,522 to $20,206 $35,025 $10,968 to $69,130 135 / 204
Master's $8,319 $2,522 to $21,989 $31,000 $9,000 to $61,650 81 / 33
Doctoral $9,409 $4,422 to $20,066 $58,100 $25,600 to $61,650 22 / 3

Annual published tuition before aid, public programs at the in-state rate. The private associate and doctoral rows rest on 4 and 3 programs, so read them as a handful of rates, not a going price. See kinesiology degree cost for the residency split.

What Does the Route to Each Job Cost Against Its Pay?

To compare routes, we priced the tuition for each job’s path at the median rates above, then divided by the job’s median pay. The result is how many years of that job’s pay the tuition equals. Public prices keep every route under a year of pay. Private prices put every route at two years or more.

Athletic trainer is the heaviest load at both prices. The master’s adds two years of tuition, and the job pays $62,520, so private tuition takes 3.2 years of pay to match, against 2.4 for exercise physiologist.

Choose a public school in your own state first. The 25 cheapest bachelor’s programs charge a median of $5,147 a year, and 96 of 339 bachelor’s programs charge under $10,000. For a graduate degree, the 9 cheapest online master’s programs charge a median of $7,020.

What Does This Mean If You’re Choosing a Kinesiology Degree?

Start with the job, not the major. If you want to be a physical therapist, occupational therapist or athletic trainer, you’re signing up for six or seven years of school, so the bachelor’s is the cheap half of the bill to control. A public in-state program keeps the first four years near $33,552 in tuition.

If you want a job that opens at the bachelor’s, like exercise physiologist or recreational therapist, a public program also makes the math easy: the route costs about half a year of pay. A private program takes more than two years of pay to cover, and the job doesn’t pay more because you paid more.

And if you’re weighing athletic training, price the master’s carefully. It’s the one graduate route here where pay doesn’t rise to meet the cost. Funded graduate assistantships, covered in the degree cost guide, change that math more than any other lever. Compare each job on its career page and check salary by state, since pay varies by where you work.

Methodology

Jobs. The 8 jobs are the occupations on this site’s career pages. The degree needed to enter comes from each profile, using O*NET education data and the licensing body’s own rules. “Graduate degree needed” means the license requires a master’s or doctorate: physical therapist, occupational therapist, athletic trainer.

Pay. National median, 25th and 75th percentile wages and employment come from the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025 release ( bls.gov/oes). The 1,168,080 workers figure adds the 8 national employment counts.

Tuition. Annual published tuition from IPEDS for the 568 programs with a card on this site (CIP 31.0505): 86 associate, 343 bachelor’s, 114 master’s and 25 doctoral. Public programs use the in-state rate. Medians are computed within each sector and level, and the 339 bachelor’s programs with a published tuition of $2,000 or more are used for the cheapest-route figures; lower values are treated as data errors.

Route cost. Four years at the median bachelor’s rate, plus two years at the median master’s rate for the same sector for athletic trainer. Only routes that run through kinesiology tuition are priced: athletic trainer, recreational therapist, exercise physiologist and coach. Physical therapist and occupational therapist graduate programs are professional degrees with their own tuition, so those routes, along with physical therapist assistant and fitness trainer, are not priced. Years of pay divides route tuition by the job’s national median wage.

Routes. HBCU, Christian-affiliated and online master’s groups come from the hand-reviewed lists behind those rankings (reviewed September and October 2026), and each group needs a published tuition of $2,000 or more. Tuition excludes housing, books, fees and aid. Data pulled October 2026.
